Collins Stewart Comments on Quidel (QDEL) Related to Swine Flu Outbreak

April 27, 2009 9:17 AM EDT

Collins Stewart made comments on Quidel (Nasdaq: QDEL) related to the swine flu outbreak.

The firm said, "The point-of-care (POC) flu tests sold by Quidel (and its competitors) are able to detect the presence of type A influenza virus, including subtype H1N1. As is seen during the flu season, these POC tests are helpful in assisting physicians to rule out bacteria as the cause for upper respiratory symptoms in a presenting patient. Because the genetic base of this virus is new, there has been no validation of Quidel s test with this type A, subtype H1N1 swine flu virus. What Quidel s test cannot do is confirm that the type A flu virus that has infected a patient is this particular swine flu virus." They said the current situation is likely to create an opportunity for non-seasonal use of Quidel's flu tests.

Shares of Quidel are up 20% this morning on the swine flu news.
