iWatch My Grandma's Britches. Trekkies Pound Table For iWrist Communicator (AAPL)

In 2012, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) had a heck of a year with a number of new product launches. The iPhone 5 made its debut, and the iPad mini is off to a healthy start. Heading into 2013, the burning question surrounding Apple is 'what next'.

At this point investors have largely pooh-poohed the Apple TV, a gadget some thought would be the next big deal. With interest in the TV waning, the rumor-mill's latest obsession is an 'iWatch.'

According to reports last week, Apple is in cahoots with Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) to create just such a device. An upstart company called Kickstart recently raised millions pitching a similar idea, adding to speculation. However, early enthusiasm for the device is said to be less than feverish, and despite an unprecedented track record of success, some analysts are already dismissing the iWatch. Upon observation, it isn’t difficult to find one very obvious reason why. It’s the name.

Specifically, the problem with the name is the word "watch", which conjures images of meetings and stress. No respectable rebellious young-person would be caught dead wearing one, as most see it as an out-dated accessory. So, if Apple is truly planning an iWatch it really might truly be dead-on-arrival.

However, all might not be lost for iWatch dreamers. Some say an 'iWrist Communicator' similar to devices worn by actors in Star Trek and other sci-fi movies, could soften the hearts of these so-called watch-haters. Here is a name that will no doubt capture the attention of young and old alike, not to mention the enthusiasm of countless trekkies on their way to the next Deep Space Nine convention. In fact, an iWrist Communicator might truly be a novel product.
