The World Cup is expected to be a boost for many companies and one that is seeing immediate results is social media juggernaut Twitter (NYSE: TWTR).
Re/code pointed out Thursday night that World Cup-related 'tweets' are already double that of the London Olympics in 2012. About 300 million posts have been made for the first 15 days of the World Cup, versus 160 million for the 16 days of the London Olympics.
Does that mean more posts per user? Yes, but the gap isn't as wide as the headline numbers indicate. Twitter reported having 150 million users at the end of 2012 and that number has grown to 255 million through March 2014. That means that each account on Twitter posted 1.03 items about the London Olympics, versus 1.18 for the World Cup.
Again, more posts = more content = more data = more opportunity to drive a premium for ads. It's a win-win-win for Twitter.
Shares are down 1.6 percent Friday.
