What Will Tesla's (TSLA) Model Y Be?

January 29, 2016 2:22 PM EST

Most people know that Tesla Motors (Nasdaq: TSLA) will release a mass-market EV with the Model 3. But, what do people know about the following vehicle, dubbed the Model Y?

According to Bloomberg, citing previous commentary from Tesla's JB Straubel, that Tesla is planning a "Model 3 Sedan & Crossover." The vehicles are expected to share a chassis.

But, CEO Elon Musk also wants a truck in the livery. Speaking in Hong Kong recently, Musk said, I think it is quite likely we will do a truck in the future ... I think it’s sort of a logical thing for us to do.

On the Model 3, stats are expected to include a 200-mile or more range, autonomous driving, and a price tag starting at $35,000 (before incentives). The car should be slightly smaller than the Model S and won't have as many bells and whistles, according to Musk.

With the sport Roadster, the sleek Model S, and the utilitarian Model X, putting a truck in the lineup seems like a smart decision for Tesla. The company will only be able to compete in the segment once its Gigafactory is completed, which will cause battery prices and, thus, overall vehicle prices, to drop. Towing capacity and range will still need to improve as putting a vehicle under load requires more energy to move.

Shares of Tesla are down modestly Friday.
