What's the Best Way to Save Your Apple (AAPL) iPhone Battery? Disable Facebook (FB)

April 8, 2014 11:24 AM EDT

Making the rounds today is a guide created by a former Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) store employee on how to extend the battery life/curb drain of your iPhone.

Most of the tips have to do with disabling something; really, a no-brainer if you think about it. The more processing the iPhone (or any device) has to do, the more juice it uses.

Number one on the recommended list its Disable Location and Background App Refresh for Facebook. For Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) investors, that probably isn't good news because that means less data coming in from a key user segment.

The author explained that his battery was draining a little fast so he ran Instruments from Xcode, Apple's developer tool, in order to see what the problem was.

During this testing, Facebook kept jumping up on the process list even though I wasn't using it. So I tried disabling Location Services and Background App Refresh for Facebook, and you'll never guess what happened: my battery percentage increased. It jumped from 12% to 17%. Crazy. I've never seen that happen before on an iPhone. The iPod touch exhibits this behavior, to my memory, although I haven't tested it in a while. For the iPhone, the battery percentage is usually pretty consistent, the author said.

While it isn't clear how many folks will read and heed the advice on this article, it has appeared at several noteworthy tech sites/blogs, which draw in tons of visitors. With Facebook looking to monetize mobile even more, being disabled on the iPhone (or, iOS if people deem the need to do that) will hamper some potential growth prospects.

Shares of Facebook are up about 2 percent Tuesday.
