Wall Street Hubbub 8/23: Tech Rumors Hot and Heavy, Potash (POT) Scours For Bigger Payday, SABMiller Looks at Multi-Billion Beer Deal

With a bidding war developing for 3Par Inc. (NYSE: PAR) between HP (NYSE: HPQ) and Dell (Nasdaq: DELL), takeover chatter is hot and heavy again today.

  • A number of smaller storage names were on speculators radar screens today on hopes that they would be next following the new 3Par bid. Among those seeing interest today were: CommVault Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: CVLT) +15%, Isilon Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: ISLN) +12%, Compellent Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: CML) +12%.

  • With traders looking at other tech names thought to be in play, Red Hat's (NYSE: RHT) name came up today. Shares rose 1.4 percent. Red Hat is number 22 on the Takeover Target List at StreetInsider.com's Merger Central

  • Brinker International (NYSE: EAT), Wellcare Group Inc. (NYSE: WCG), and Whirlpool Corp. (NYSE: WHR) were also the subject of unsubstantiated takeover chatter today.

  • PotashCorp's (NYSE: POT) board official rejected the BHP (NYSE: BHP) $130/share takeover bid, and disclosed it has been approached by third parties about alternative transactions. Chinese private-equity fund Hopu Investment Management Co is said to be studying a bid for POT. Vale (Nasdaq: VALE), a logical strategic suitor, is reportedly not interested.

  • In the beer sector, SABMiller PLC is reportedly considering a bid of up to $10.9 billion to acquire the beer business of Foster's Group Ltd.

  • Deutsche Bank analysts said MYR Group (Nasdaq: MYRG) and CREE (Nasdaq: CREE) are the most likely takeover targets in greentech.
