Vodafone Group Plc (Nasdaq: VOD) shares are indicated lower Tuesday morning amid comments by CFO Andy Halford at a Goldman Sachs conference this morning.

Halford noted that the German market was strong, but there was still weakness across southern Europe. Not real surprises there, given Greek and Italian debt and banking issues.

Growth opportunities for Vodafone include smartphones and 4G LTE.

Most notably, Vodafone said it would welcome an operating system beyond Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android or Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS. This could open the door for Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) or Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) to enter with their operating system offerings, which are Windows Phone and BlackBerry, respectively.

Vodafone is down about 0.1 percent early. Vodafone is a minority partner in Verizon Wireless with Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ).
