Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ) is looking to make its FiOS service more flexible for customers.
According to the WSJ, on April 19th, Verizon will allow some customers to sign up for a slim package of TV channels, which includes ABC, Fox, CNN, and AMC, among others. Customers will then be allowed to add channel packs
spanning different genres from sports, to lifestyle, and pop culture.
The cheapest plan offered by Verizon will run $55 per month and will come with two channel packs. Each additional package will cost $10 per month and include 10 to 17 channels.
Customers will be able to alter channel packages only every 30 days.
News comes as broadcasters and TV providers are looking to stem cost cutting
by consumers. With the advent of on-demand programming from the likes of Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) and a slew of viewing options available for free or at low cost via the Internet, Verizon's move might be one mimicked by competitors in the not-so-distant future.
Shares of Verizon are flat in early trading Friday.
