United Airlines (UAL) Comes Under FAA Scrutiny for Pilot Qualifications, Scheduling Issues

April 10, 2015 7:13 AM EDT

United Continental (NYSE: UAL) is on the hot seat with regulators over lack of pilot and scheduling oversight.

According to the WSJ, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) increased its supervision of UAL two months back on risks related to repeated violations of mandatory pilot qualification and scheduling requirements.

The news was highlighted in a February 6th letter from a high-ranking FAA official to UAL's to safety officer. The letter was preceded by a safety warning sent the prior month by the FAA, which was prompted by four safety events and near misses.

While the letter didn't go into detail, issues like pilots not undergoing required, periodic check rides or the airline not recording such events could be issues. UAL also came under scrutiny of scheduling issues, which may cause flights to go on for longer than FAA regulations permit.

UAL has issued a response to the letter, which the FAA is currently reviewing.

Shares of UAL are slightly positive Friday morning ahead of the opening bell
