Twitter (NYSE: TWTR) was said to bid on rights to stream NFL game.
UPDATE - Today's news comes as Twitter has been said to look into streaming more live content.
The WSJ noted that the game that Twitter bid for was ultimately won by Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), which also recently announced it would stream the October 25, 2015, event. Twitter proposed a revenue split and non-exclusive rights, but the bid wasn't as competitive as rivals' bids.
Twitter's new scheme is called Project Lightning, which will curate and organize posts, video, and photos surrounding live events. The initiative comes as executives asked the question of why people would use Twitter. The goal is to draw people in for the live events without having to master Twitter's format and conventions.
