U.S. Handset Sales Up 14% in Q2; NPD Data Puts RIM's BlackBerry Curve as Top-Selling Smartphone (RIMM)

Data coming out of NPD today showed that handset sales in the U.S. continue to outperform through one of the most frightening recessionary periods in recent history. Sales volume of mobile handsets in Q2 rose 14% when compared to the same quarter last year, lead by an impressive rise in smartphones, which now make up about 28% of entire handset market.

The market research firm noted that Research In Motion's (Nasdaq: RIMM) BlackBerry Curve was the top-selling smartphone, while Samsung's Rant and LG's enV2 were the two most popular handsets in the feature set.

The news should be a relief to Research In Motion shareholders as competition between it's BlackBerry devices, Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone and Palm's (Nasdaq: PALM) Pre seems to be at its most ferocious pace yet.

Traders seem to be shrugging off the data, however, this morning, selling shares of Research In Motion with the broader markets. The stock most recently traded at $72.82, down 1.6% from yesterday's close.
