Twitter (TWTR) Still Lags Instagram on Mobile, But Looks to Make Up Ground (FB)

March 27, 2014 11:19 AM EDT
Twitter (NYSE: TWTR) has grown into quite a social media juggernaut over the last few years. But, when it comes to mobile access, the microblog has some catching up to do.

The Financial Times (FT) reported, citing data from e-Marketer, that Twitter has about 30.8 million mobile users in the U.S. last year, versus 35 million for Facebook's (Nasdaq: FB) Instagram.

While that might seem like a bummer for Twitter investors, there is a silver lining: Twitter boasts 240 million monthly active users (MAUs), according to its latest data, versus just 200 million MAUs for Instagram.

Facebook has allowed Instagram to continue to operate independently since its acquisition in 2012 (ahead of Facebook's IPO, to investors' chagrin), though it does have access to Facebook's resources. Twitter doesn't have a similar setup itself, looking to grow more organically than its social media peers.

That said, Twitter is looking to delve deeper into a few more segments. That company announced a photo tagging and sharing service on its blog recently and is also expected to move further into music,

Shares of Twitter are up 3.6 percent Thursday.
