The No-Brainer Way for Microsoft (MSFT) and Sony (SNE) to Thwart Gaming Competition...

June 28, 2013 10:19 AM EDT
What is the one way both Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Sony (NYSE: SNE) would severely be able to stem competition in the world of gaming?

According to news out today, the answer is simple: allow current and next-generation gaming consoles to play Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS games.

This doesn't seem to make sense to most, given that Microsoft and Sony are unlikely to draw in big revenue from $5 mobile games. But, it would also prevent gamers from using other systems to fulfill that demand.

According to the WSJ, Google is planning to launch its own gaming console which will be focused on Android-compatible games. There's also one coming out from Mad Catz (AMEX: MCZ) and numerous other private developers. These companies know that, given the popularity of Android and its games, consumers wouldn't mind knocking over a few pigs on the big screen as well.

It would be unlikely that the lower-cost consoles and games would sway big-time gamers, but for the average consumer who can play, oh, something like "Sonic the Hedgehog" with better-than-perfect graphics and sound on a smartphone, why wouldn't they want to put that onto an HDTV complete with full-size game controller?

Microsoft would likely push for more users on its Windows Phone operating system, which is fine. But, Microsoft isn't a first-mover here and should probably work on weaning people off of Android and iOS if its plans to make a bigger dent in the mobile market.

So, we're not sure if Android or iOS is currently playable on either Xbox 360 of PlayStation 4, but plans should be in the works to add some sort of application which would allow this transfer.

Shares of Microsoft, Sony, and Google are all lower Friday.
