Tesla (TSLA) Said Pushing for Extemely Low Drag Coefficient on Upcoming Model 3

November 18, 2015 11:09 AM EST

Tesla Motors (Nasdaq: TSLA) is said to be looking for "extreme" minimization of wind resistance on its upcoming Model 3.

Electrek.co noted the CEO Elon Musk is pushing engineers to come up with a coefficient of drag less than 0.20, which would make the Model 3 have the lowest drag coefficient of any mass-produced automobile.

Notably, the Model S has a drag coefficient of 0.24. Achieving something below 0.20 would put the Model 3 in the category of hypermile cars like the GM EV1 and Volkswagen XL1.

Some techniques said being employed by Tesla to meet the requirement include removal of side-view mirrors, implementing a single-blade wiper that stays hidden when not in use, and redesigning the underbody and battery pack to channel air more efficiently.

The Model 3 is expected to debut sometime in the first-half of 2016.

Shares of Tesla are up over 2.5 percent Wednesday.
