Things are about to get real for notebooks.
According to the latest data from research firm NPD, tablet shipments are likely to exceed notebook shipments three years ahead of schedule! The firm estimates that 240 million tablets will ship in 2013 versus expectations of 207 million notebook shipments.
Previous estimates from NPD had tablet shipments overtaking notebooks in 2016. Of course, the world was a much different place back in...July 2012? (H/T to TheNextWeb.)
Growth will be extraordinary. Previously expecting tablet CAGR of 28 percent annually through FY17, NPD now sees growth of 64 percent in 2013 alone.
What changed NPD's outlook were Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) rivals. Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN), Acer, ASUStek, and others have all produced tablets that are lower-cost and still desirable to consumers. Different screen sizes also contributed to increased adaptation. (Just look at Apple's iPad mini sales in China, as an example.)
