Stem-cell related stocks are giving back yesterday's gains following reports today that fetal stem cells could have triggered tumors in a sick Israeli boy. (Click here for yesterday's report.)

The story, which was ran in a journal published by the Public Library of Science Medicine, happens to be the first documented case of a human brain tumor following injections of fetal stem cells. According to reports, the boys family was seeking a possible cure for his ataxia telangiectasia, or A-T, a fatal genetic disease which causes most patients to pass away in their teens or early 20's. Although the cause of the tumor pushing on the boys brain has not yet been completely confirmed, one study, cited in an AP report, concluded that the tumor was in-fact caused by the fetal cells.

Around the sector:
  • StemCells (Nasdaq: STEM) down 8% to $2.29
  • Geron (Nasdaq: GERN) down 8.8% to $5.91
  • Cytori Therapeutics (Nasdaq: CYTX) down 6.2% to $3.80
