According to PaidContent.org, the U.S. State Dept., which was mulling a $16.5 million no-bid contract for Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) Kindle Touch readers, has pulled the offer. The Department said it will conduct additional market research to reexamine requirements for the program.

Under the contract, the State Department would have provided 2,500 Kindle Touches to overseas language programs, each coming preloaded with 50 titles. The contract had a four-year option, with a limit of 7,000 Kindle Touches per year.

Shares of Amazon.com are up 1.9 percent Thursday afternoon.
