Sprint (S) CEO Hesse Sees 4G as 'Immensly Important' in 2010 (CLWR)

Sprint (NYSE: S) CEO Dan Hesse believes that their 4G network will be immensely important to the company in the coming year, he told analysts at an investor conference.

Clearwire (NASDAQ: CLWR), which is owned by Sprint, is working on a long-range Wi-Fi technology called WiMax, which is utilized over the 4G network. The CEO said that prices will most likely stay the same, but the customer will get more with the 4G network.

Hesse expects pre-paid, one of Sprint's bread-and-butter segments, to grow faster than traditional contract service. They plan to offer pre-paid through different brands and distribution outlets to avoid diluting the Sprint core business.

Hesse holds a neutral position on net neutrality. He believes that the rules governing net neutrality aren't needed, and he doesn't want the rules creating unintended consequences.

Finally, the CEO said that, while tiered pricing would be a possible solution to deal with increased traffic on wireless networks, the real solution is in reducing the cost to carry that traffic.
