If there's one thing you can say about Japan, it can be a ruthless and harsh place from time to time. For Apple, that harshness recently reared its ugly head.

Apple lost to Samsung in Japan.

Bloomberg reports that Tokyo District Judge Tamotsu Shoji said Samsung didn't infringe on Apple's tablet and smartphone design patents, as well as IP tied to synchronizing music and data onscreen.

Most shockingly of all, Apple simply sought ¥100 million (about $1.3 million) in damages, a fraction of the $1.05 billion awarded in the U.S.

In total, Samsung says it got 12 percent of sales from Asia, but didn't identify specific turnover in Japan. Apple draws about 5.7 percent of sales from Japan.

It wasn't made clear whether Samsung would move for a ban of iPhone and iPad sales in Japan.

Ahead of opening bells Friday, Apple shares are indicated lower.
