"Who's Apple?" - Samsung

According to new research from Strategy Analytics, Samsung has overtaken Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) for top-spot as the world with its Galaxy series.

Riding on the success of Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android mobile OS, Samsung's Galaxy series is the first to oust Apple's iPhones as the de facto smartphone sub-brand.

The firm commented, "In an increasingly brand-conscious smartphone market, Samsung and Apple are currently the clear leaders, and with their deep pockets enabling hard-to-match marketing spend, they represent a considerable challenge to the chasing pack."

Shares of Apple ended Thursday's session down about 1 percent.
