Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) shares are seeing a little bit of pressure Monday amid overall market weakness and also one other key item: Samsung.
Samsung announced the new Galaxy S III is making its way onto five major U.S. carriers over the next few weeks. Carriers include AT&T (NYSE: T), Verizon (NYSE: VZ), Sprint (NYSE: S), U.S. Cellular (NYSE: USM), and T-Mobile.
For the most part, preorders of the device will take place in June with in-store and online purchases starting either in late-June or the beginning of July.
What this means is stiffer competition for Apple's iPhone, because the Galaxy S III is getting great reviews.
The Galaxy S III runs on 4G LTE networks and boasts a 4.8-inch display. Apple's next device is said to be equipped with a larger 4-inch display, though whether it will run on a 4G LTE network scheme is unclear.
It's processor is quad-core. There's gesture functions. It runs on Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) newest Android platform, Ice Cream Sandwich.
This isn't an advertisement for the Galaxy S III (which also has drawbacks. Read: display, design, TouchWiz interface), but simply pointing out what Apple's going against heading into holiday shopping 2012. Will it stop Apple from killing it in sales and earnings? Probably not, but more users might shift back over to Samsung given the key new features of its next device (which is already on sale in Europe).
Now, let the patent lawsuits commence.
