Russian ex-Goldman Sachs (GS) Employee Arrested After Stealing Secret Computer Trading Codes

July 6, 2009 11:41 AM EDT

A Russian immigrant and ex-Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) employee was arrested July 3rd and charged with stealing secret computer trading codes from the New York-based investment bank.

Sergey Aleynikov was a computer programmer and worked at Goldman Sachs' New York offices, according to reports from Bloomberg which cited a person familiar with the case.

Aleynikov told U.S. agents he took files for proprietary secret computer trading codes used for "sophisticated, high-speed and high-volume trades on various stock and commodities markets." Aleynikov downloaded the files from the Web site to his home computer, his laptop computer and a portable memory devise.

Aleynikov was earning $400,000 a year at Goldman, but left the firm to earn three times that amount joining a new company and engaging in high-volume automated trading.

Aleynikov appeared July 4 in Manhattan federal court and was ordered held on $750,000 bail.
