Record-Smashing Quarter Puts Apple (AAPL) Atop Mobile, Client PC Shipments

Sales of Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone in the fourth-quarter of 2011 weren't just good, they obliterated the competition.

According to research firm Canalys, anyway. Additionally, Apple also became the global leader in smartphone and client PC shipments.

With 37 million iPhone units shipped last quarter, Apple smashed the old record set by Nokia (NYSE: NOK) of 28.3 million, Canalys noted. On client PC shipments, Canalys also included the iPad tablet device in its calculation.

Second-place Samsung shipped 35.3 million units last quarter, while Nokia moved just 19.6 million units (an increase of 17 percent sequentially, but down 31 percent from the same period in 2010).

Total shipments for 2011 amounted to 93.1 million iPhones, growing 96 percent over the previous year. Second-place finisher Samsung sold 91.9 million for the year and Nokia shipped 77.3 million.

Fourth-place finisher Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) shipped 13.2 million units of BlackBerry devices last quarter and 51.4 million for 2011...a 5 percent increase.

Overall, PC shipments rose 16.3 percent to 120.2 million last quarter, with tablets accounting for 22 percent of the total.

Apple, RIM, and Nokia are all indicated lower Monday.
