PC Sales Slump More than Expected in Q4; Windows 8 Failed to Grab Attention (MSFT)

January 14, 2013 8:46 AM EST
No one really questions the idea that PC sales are slowing, but its always fun to mull over data to see if a bottom might form.

Today, we have Digitimes and IDC reporting that fourth-quarter PC shipments fell 6.4 percent to 89.8 million units, outpacing expectations for a 4.4 percent decline. The drop comes amid Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows 8 platform not meeting speculation quite as well as hoped.

Results in the quarter are also the first time in over five years that the PC market has shown a year-over-year decline in shipments.

Sales in the U.S. fell 4.5 percent for the quarter and seven percent in 2012.

Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) remained the top shipper, moving 15.023 million units for a market share of 16.7 percent. The result was about flat from last year. This might be good or bad news depending on your perspective; good because H-P is still on top of a large industry, but bad because that industry is a sinking ship.

Lenovo was second with 14.105 million units shipped, from 13.040 million in the same period last year. Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) was third at 9.482 million, Acer fourth at 6.959 million, and ASUStek fifth at 6.467 million units.

It wasn't made clear what expectations for 2013 are, but single-digit consolidation is likely as tablets, notebooks, and convertible notebooks (tablet and notebook all in one!) replace traditional desktops.

H-P is higher early while Dell is seeing some pressure Monday morning.
