Nokia (NOK) Will Still Order WP7.5 in FY13, May Include Android in Low-End Handsets (GOOG)

December 4, 2012 9:42 AM EST
Depending on how you view the following news, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is either too far gone or a mad genius.

Digitimes reports today that Nokia is placing orders for Windows Phone 7.5 to vendors for the duration of 2013. The move is aimed at capturing emerging market share and doing so in a cost-efficient way.

Licensing fees and more precise hardware standards mean Windows Phone 8 isn't a smart choice to sell in emerging markets.

Additionally, given that Windows Phone 7.5 won't be able to transition to Windows Phone 8, supply chain sources said Nokia might go with something like Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android operating system for low-end handsets in 2013. However, nothing surrounding Nokia using Android has been officially affirmed.

Shares of Nokia are up 1.8 percent in early trading Tuesday.
