Next Microsoft (MSFT) Big Windows Platform Refresh Will Switching Between Desktop and 'Modern' Interfaces

June 30, 2014 11:19 AM EDT

Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) next version of Windows is expected to be more mouse-and-keyboard friendly, while its Start menu will also get its first revamp in 17 years or so.

Neowin said the Modern UI (or, the version best used with touchscreens) will be disabled by default and users will need to switch it on manually. The Modern UI (with live tiles and apps) will take precedence over the desktop version of Windows 9 (nicknamed "Threshold").

Microsoft will still allow Modern UI apps to run in a windowed mode on the user's desktop and the Start menu will allow for the launch of 'unpinned' Modern UI apps.

Threshold will include app snapping, which is more refined and may include new positioning. However, specific details are still sparse.

The overall UI (user interface) for Threshold will also be distinct, making it very easy to distinguish it from a version of Windows 8.

Shares of Microsoft are down 0.7 percent.
