Next 'Pirates' Movie Delayed Following 'Long Ranger' Flop (DIS)

September 11, 2013 6:42 AM EDT
Following the large miss with "The Lone Ranger" over the summer, Disney (NYSE: DIS) has opted to delay release of the fifth in the "Pirates" series.

The film -- "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" -- was slated to open July 10th, 2015. Jerry Bruckheimer is expected to produce the film, though he also produced "The Lone Ranger," which might put Disney recording a loss of as much of $190 million this quarter.

"Pirates" has been a successful series for Disney, raking in $3.73 billion in global ticket sales since the debut of "The Curse of the Black Pearl" in 2003, according to Bloomberg-compiled data.

Though Disney didn't specify reasoning behind the move, market speculation pegs script issues as cause of the delay.

Shares of Disney closed 2 percent better Tuesday and are up 26 percent in 2013, versus a move 16 percent higher for the S&P 500 index.
