New Data Suggests Sales of Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows 8 are Missing Expectations

According to new data from the NPD Group, total Windows 8 sales are down for Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT)
NPD says that Windows sales are down 21 percent from last year, with desktop sales down 9 percent and notebook PC sales down 24 percent.
Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis for NPD, said Windows 8 may not have been "the impetus for a sales turnaround some had hoped for."
Microsoft has previously communicated that about 40 million Windows 8 licenses were sold since the launch in October, a number which includes consumers and businesses.
NPD also noted that 58 percent of Windows computing devices were sold with Windows 8 preloaded.
Earlier, it was speculated that Microsoft might cut orders on its Surface RT tablets to 2 million, from expectations of 4 million this quarter. Microsoft also said the Surface Pro would debut in January with a starting price of $899 (sans cover).
Shares are down 1.4 percent Thursday.
