Times are going to get a little tougher for Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) in the U.K. this week, according to information out over the weekend.
According to a release from the company, BSkyB will launch its NOW TV service on July 17th. The service will initially be available on Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android-based devices, PCs, and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) Macs, with an iOS version expected out within a month.
In the release, BSkyB said there would be an option to rent DVD movies at 99 pence to £3.99 each, with a monthly subscription service -- Sky Movies Pass -- expected to price at £15.
Additionally, BSkyB said Sky Sports is due to launch on NOW TV before the end of the year, commenting, "This will enable NOW TV customers to enjoy live action from the Barclays Premier League, UEFA Champions League, England Test cricket, Heineken Cup rugby, ATP tennis, the Masters from Augusta and much more." No word on pricing for the Sky Sports package.
So, with Netflix looking to broader expansion, the U.K. might prove challenging. Many folks have become used to BSkyB over the years, and the possibility of being able to watch some of the most anticipated sporting events only sweetens the pot. In addition, Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) is looking for broader penetration with its recently acquired LOVFiLM service. Both Netflix and LOVEFiLM have been criticized in the past for lack of offerings, and today's announcement from BSkyB does nothing to help that out.
Traders will also keep an eye on Coinstar (Nasdaq: CSTR), which has ops in the U.K. as well.
News Corp (Nasdaq: NWSA) owns 39 percent of BSkyB
