Netflix (NFLX) Goes on Awards Offensive with New Site

February 26, 2013 10:42 AM EST
Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) launched its own "awards" to counter the popular Academy Awards program, called the Flixies.

Voting will run now through March 10th and it's not entirely clear what Netflix's goal is here. While the Oscar's dole out awards to new movies, Netflix has already-ran movies and TV shows. The company said that the Flixies are designed to "celebrate the new viewing habits of today’s entertainment watchers."

In any case, categories are rather clever and include such items as "Best Tantrum Tamer" and "Best Bromance." Maybe the most controversial is "Best PMS Drama."

Voting is open to everyone and there is no cap on how many votes can be submitted. So, if you have a "Best Hangover Cure" that everyone just has to see, then keep on clicking! Netflix doesn't mind.

Shares are up about 0.2 percent Tuesday.
