NXP Semi (NXPI) Slumps; Samsung Shift to Broadcom (BRCM) for Galaxy S4 All But Affirmed

March 18, 2013 11:26 AM EDT
NXP Semiconductors NV (Nasdaq: NXPI) recently saw pressure on speculation that Samsung went with a rival for NFC equipment in its Galaxy S IV smartphone.

NFC Times reports today that Samsung may have actually opted to use a Broadcom (Nasdaq: BRCM) NFC controller part in its latest device. The NFC chip has about 1.2-megabytes of flash memory, which would allow for multiple payment applications on the device. Payment partners for Samsung includes Visa (NYSE: V) and may also include peer MasterCard (NYSE: MA).

The loss is a big one for NXP given that Samsung is expected to sell tens of millions of the device. NXP shipped about 125 million chips last year, besting views, while also acquiring another 50 design wins.

Shares are down 3.9 percent Monday morning.
