Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) new 'Surface' tablet may be dead before it even hits shelves.
Reports today from DigiTimes suggests that "the end-market price of the Windows 8 Pro-based Surface tablet PC with Ivy Bridge processor to be at least above US$799, while the Windows RT-based model, featuring Nvidia's Tegra 3, will be priced above US$599." Pegatron Technology could be tagged to produced the device.
Alternatively, Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) "new iPad" starts at $499 for the 16GB Wi-Fi unit. For the 64GB Wi-Fi unit, pricing is $699. The 16GB Wi-Fi+Cellular iPad is $629 and the 64GB Wi-Fi+Cellular model is $829. Even further, customers can pick up an iPad 2 model for just $399.
So in essence, when it launches in stores, customers may take a quick look at the Surface, the price, and then quickly walk over to the nearest Apple store to buy an iPad.
If you really want a Surface, you can wait a few months after launch and probably get it for next to nothing in a Zune-style closeout.
