Fill in the blank: You know you've hit rock-bottom when _____________.
If you answered "Microsoft ices you out of its next Windows Phone operating system," then congratulations, give yourself one point. And get yourself to a university or a witch doctor, because you're clearly wiser than you first appear. Whatever you're doing right now isn't exploiting your full talent.
According to reports late Wednesday, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) opted out of giving HTC access to its next operating system, citing HTC's lack of experience in tablets and the fact that it doesn't sell enough devices.
Bloomberg noted HTC is also having trouble garnering chips from QUALCOMM (Nasdaq: QCOM), as the San Diego, CA-based manufacturer also needs to fill some orders from HTC rivals Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Samsung.
The shun could be a signal that some of HTC's best days have passed. Having built an ecosystem around Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android OS, the company has struggled with innovation and quality over the last several months as competition has heightened. Earlier in the session Wednesday, HTC cut its second-quarter outlook on lower shipment expectations.
That's not to say Microsoft's next operating system will be a flop; many reports have Windows 8 being a decent, if not challenging, system to use. However, the current Windows Phone platform, WP7, has failed to gain a significant presence with mobile device users. With the upcoming launch of Windows 8 in late 2012, Microsoft already has partnered with some of the big boys like Asustek, Acer, Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ), and Dell (Nasdaq: DELL).
Shares of Microsoft ended 3 percent higher.
