Nokia (NYSE: NOK) may be big into Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phone 8, but a new competitor has emerged. You'll never guess who it is.
It's Samsung.
According to the Windows Phone Blog, the new device is called the Samsung ATIV S.
We'd like to type more about the device, but Microsoft's Ben Rudolph is going the extra mile is describing it. Here's a great example [emphasis ours]: "Samsung built the ATIV S with the latest and greatest technology, especially for anyone who want a superphone that’s equal parts powerhouse and head turner. (Editor's note: We've attached the ATIV S photo...which part is head turning?)
"Inside the crazy-thin 8.7mm brushed aluminum chassis is a huge 4.8” HD Super AMOLED display made from Corning Gorilla Glass 2 (read: tough to break, but still light) and a rundown of killer specs: 1.5Ghz dual-core processor, 1GB o...(words)...Backing all of this up is a massive 2300mAh battery to keep you rocking all day.
"Samsung made the bezel of the ATIV S an oblong hemisphere (hello, Art History degree, I missed you). In English that means that the bezel actually bulges out slightly, then tapers more acutely to the back." And so on.
The last part feels like another patent lawsuit is imminent.
Overall, this smartphone looks similar to an offering from HTC, Motorola, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), [insert your favorite mobile OEM here]. While it might be thin and light, Microsoft should've demanded a little more in the design phase from Samsung.
Shares of Nokia are well off intraday lows, down about 5 percent on the session. As a reminder, Microsoft and Nokia will be holding a September 5th event with expectations surrounding the debut of Nokia's Windows Phone 8 devices.
