Another positive for Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT)?

According to reports out of Digitimes on Thursday, Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Motorola Mobility and Lenovo are delaying the launch of Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) Medfield/Android-based tablet PCs.

Factors cited in the delay of the tablets -- which were first unveiled in April 2012 and expected to be shipped in mid-2012 -- were the upcoming launch of Microsoft's Windows 8 Pro and Windows 8 RT Surface tablets, Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) next iPad, and entry-level Android-based tablets from first-tier players.

Intel is seeing lagging support from some carriers as well, given past sales performance for tablet PCs.

However, when Windows 8 launches in late October, Intel will unveil its Z2760 processor from its Clover Trail platform, which is specifically designed to optimize Windows 8. In addition, Intel will be offering the 22-nm Ivy Bridge processor for high-end Windows Surface tablet PCs.

The initial news is good for Microsoft, meaning the market will be a little less hectic when Surface tablets begin shipping later in the year. Let's just hope Microsoft can keep prices reasonable on the Surface models.

Shares are Microsoft are up 1 percent Thursday.
