Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) had a huge win for Windows 8 this morning.
Ahead of the opening bell for U.S. markets, the U.S. Department of Defense entered a three-year Joint Enterprise Licensing Agreement with Microsoft for enterprise licenses and software assurance.
Microsoft noted that it was "the most comprehensive licensing agreement" it ever established with the DoD. The agreement covers 75 percent of all DoD personnel. Latest numbers have that personnel at about 450,000 or so (a 2006 estimate).
Many enterprises are apprehensive about making the switch to Windows 8 and many are waiting until later in 2013 before a move is even considered. However, today's action should provide Microsoft shareholders a little bit of confidence given that 330,000 new people will be using Windows 8 daily, potentially talking about it to friends and relatives. Investors just hope that's a positive conversation, versus one full of gripes.
Shares of Microsoft are down about 1.4 percent Friday. For the release, click here.
