Microsoft (MSFT) to Oust Apple (AAPL) as Biggest Positive Contributor in S&P 500

November 13, 2013 9:10 AM EST
Is Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) becoming more influential than Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL)?

In terms of the S&P 500 index, it might be. Data compiled by Bloomberg on Wednesday shows that the S&P 500 is up about 24 percent on the year for a gain of 346 points. Each company has contributed about 0.69 points to that rise, though a company's overall contribution is based on its financial performance and overall weight in the index.

For the year, Microsoft is up 9.23 points, leading all S&P 500-listed companies. Google, Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) is second at 9.17 points.

But, it isn't like Apple doesn't have any influence. The company's dip of 1.59 points is having the most negative effect on the index in 2013. Shares are down 2 percent this year, but Apple's weight is about 3 percent in the S&P 500.

Apple was the S&P 500 positive contributor champ from 2009 through 2012, which shares topped $700 at one point. Last year, Apple contributed about 13 points to the S&P 500 by itself, while the rest of the 500 companies contributed 169 points.

Not to say Apple hasn't left its mark either. Since 2009, the S&P 500 is up 1,100 points. Apple contributed 44 points to that move, more than the next two companies combined.

Microsoft and Apple are both lower in early trading.
