Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows 8 to Have Markedly Better Graphics Performance Over Windows 7

Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows 8 is expected to be an improvement over the current Windows 7 operating system, with no exception being made for graphics improvements either.

According to the Windows 8 Development blog, the following will be some of improvements in graphics for the next version of Windows over the current Windows 7 benchmarks:

Text performance
  • Rendering a screen full of reading-size text formatted as paragraphs as you would find in a web page or Word document - improved 150 percent;

  • Rendering a screen full of small chunks of text at reading sizes as you would find in user interface controls such as button labels or menus - improved 131 percent; and

  • Rendering a screen full of small chunks of heading-sized text as you would see in titles & headings in Metro style apps and as headlines on blog posts and news articles on the web - improved 336 percent.
Geometry rendering:
  • Lines - up 184 percent;

  • Ellipses - up 369 percent;

  • Rounded rectangles - up 220 percent; and

  • Rectangles - up 438 percent.
There are plenty more improvements mentioned.

Overall, the objectives for Windows 8 include:
  1. Ensure that all Metro style experiences are rendered smoothly and quickly;
  2. Provide a hardware-accelerated platform for all Metro style apps;
  3. Add new capabilities to DirectX to enable stunning visual experiences; and
  4. Support the widest diversity of graphics hardware ever.
