Madoff Whistleblower Harry Markopolos Feared For His Life

February 3, 2009 6:08 PM EST

Harry Markopolos, the man who warned the SEC as early as 2000 that Bernard Madoff was running a Ponzi scheme, is scheduled to testify before the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee On Financial Services tomorrow at 9:30AM.

In a prepared speech, Markopolos said because the SEC did nothing about his repeated warnings about Madoff over a period of nine years, he "became fearful for the safety of my family." Markopolos said at various times over the nine years he was warning the agency about Madoff, he and his associates, "feared for our lives." Markopolos said he knew Madoff was "one of the most powerful men on Wall Street."
