Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) is nearing a $4 billion deal for 43 additional F-35 JSFs with the U.S. Dept. of Defense.
Reuters noted that the new contract would lower the overall cost of the F-35 by two to four percent. That puts the F-35 in the price range of $94 to $96 million, from a recent per unit cost of $98 million.
Lockheed and suppliers have been aiming to cut the cost of the F-35 program, which is expected to total arond $400 billion for 2,457 U.S. jets over the next several years. An additional $1 trillion is estimated to operate and maintain the aircraft over the next 50 years.
This would be the eighth batch of F-35s ordered by the U.S.
