An article in the New York Times Friday pointed out how the nuclear crisis in Japan has put into the spotlight some small biotechnology companies that are developing drugs that treat radiation poisoning.
Companies mentioned in the article included Cleveland BioLabs, Inc. (Nasdaq: CBLI) and Osiris Therapeutics (Nasdaq: OSIS).
Cleveland BioLabs is developing a drug that fools the body into believing there has been a "massive salmonella infection", which then triggers a response that produces Neupogen to help restore the immune system and gastrointestinal tract.
The Defense Department awarded Osiris Therapeutics a $224 million contract to develop a therapy using stem cells to help repair gastrointestinal injuries.
Another company mentioned in the article was micro-cap Aeolus Pharmaceuticals Inc. (OTCBB: AOLS) which has recently seen 5.6 million shares trade hands on a single day, or more than 1,000 times normal.
The CEO of the company was quoted as saying "it was crazy, just crazy." The article notes that Aeolus has a federal contract worth up to $118 million to develop drug to protect the lungs from radiation.
