Nokia (NYSE: NOK) had high hopes when it entered a partnership with Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) to bring Windows Phone to its devices. But those hopes are quickly fading.

According to Reuters, citing a report from Exane BNP Paribas, the new Nokia Windows phone will do nothing to oust Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS-based and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android-based smartphones from atop the heap.

Results from a recent survey showed just 2 percent of Europeans in the market saying they would pick the Lumia 800, Nokia's latest offering with Windows Phone.

Reuters noted analysts saw nothing wrong with the Lumia 800, save for one glitch on some models that affected battery life.

Notably, Symbian-based phones, which Nokia sold off a while ago, continue to outsell Microsoft Windows Phones by about a 10 to one margin.

Bulls on Nokia contend much of the negativity about the Windows Phone has been built into the stock price. Arguments have also been made Nokia's patent portfolio has seen a marked upgrade since CEO Stephen Elop took the helm.

With Windows 8 expected to debut in 2012, some speculate the "mobile-friendly" operating system could bring over consumer in troves.

But, with Nokia's shares popping the most on a rumor Microsoft might just acquire the Espoo, Finland-based mobile OEM, and potential trimming of buybacks as dividends as cash flow ebbs, some might still be holding out for a potential bid.

OR, maybe Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) and Nokia should merger, then adopt the Android operating system!

Amid the overall market pressure, Nokia shares are performing rather well, down just 0.1 percent on the session.

Maybe you should use some other source than just Exane. When you read these stories you allways run in to this same exane story. And Reuters uses this same story again and again... What is the point?
