Another positive for Nokia (NYSE: NOK)?
According to Topeka Capital's Brian White, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is planning to release its iPhone in various colors. This is a break from past traditions, when consumers were get excited about a white iPhone versus the traditional black version. It should be noted that both performed equally as well.
Nokia, on the other hand, has been going all out in its smartphone offerings. The Lumia 920 is no stranger to a splash of color; the device is currently available in cyan, yellow, and red, along with the traditional black and white models. Notably, some have said that the color pallet was Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) idea.
Does that mean Apple is going to get all gimmicky to sell more devices? Maybe Apple got a sneak peek at Nokia's sales grid and noticed that the white and black models were selling less quickly than the colored counterparts.
Seems like an unusual thing to quibble over color, but given that the look of a smartphone is nearly as important as its function for initial purchasers, is a point that should be given more consideration moving forward.
White did make the point that Apple is no stranger to color as its latest iPod Touch line looks like it was hit with a box of Lucky Charms.
Shares of Nokia and Apple are higher Wednesday. Active traders might want o keep an eye on Zagg (Nasdaq: ZAGG), which makes covers and accessories for the likes of the iPhone. A colored case may adversely affected sales.
