Internet Outage Could Benefit VirnetX (VHC), Symantec (SYMC)

July 9, 2012 9:25 AM EDT
Shares of Internet security providers are trading higher on speculation that thousands of users might experience an outage Monday.

With many users downloading a malicious software infection one year ago, the FBI is planning to shut down Internet servers of certain users to fight the outbreak.

According to reports, about 570,000 Internet users downloaded the virus via a successful scam. To fight the hackers, the FBI would need to turn off the servers housing the attack, which would cause a massive Internet outage.

Indications that a machine might be infected include slowed surfing and antivirus software being disabled.

On the news today, VirnetX (AMEX: VHC), Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC), and Intel's (Nasdaq: INTC) McAfee might all see some benefit, as users scramble to get extra protection on their PCs.
