Grab your life raft, the tablet tidal wave is coming.
According to data from Digitimes Wednesday, consumers will be hit with an onslaught of tablet PCs later in 2012 as Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) look to fulfill the needs of virtually every tablet user. For every purpose. Every time. Ever.
Following the expected debut of Windows 8 in September, about 32 new Windows 8 tablet PCs will launch on Intel's chip set through such OEMs as Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ), Dell (Nasdaq: DELL), Lenovo, Acer, Asustek, and Toshiba. Prices for most will range from $300 to $1000, according to suppliers, while there will be some selling below $300 to compete more wholly with the likes of Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN), Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS), and a potential mini iPad from Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL).
The wave is expected to cut Apple's iPad market share from about 70 percent now to below 50 percent by the middle of 2013.
Of note, Intel has said Lenovo's status as the go-to for educational and business tablet PCs in China will make it a strong driver for the Windows 8 platform.
Shares of both Microsoft and Intel are indicated for a lower open Wednesday.
