Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) shares are seeing a little profit taking following Wednesday earnings pop. Shares are down 0.7 percent on the session today.

Another bit of data today might be adding to pressure today. According to Digitimes, Intel's current Ivy Bridge processors and their chipsets may have the shortest life cycle in recent memory. The speculation comes as motherboard makers see Ivy Bridge demand peaking in the fourth-quarter of this year.

Digitimes noted that Intel will be releasing its next-generation 8 series chips in April 2013, just one-year following the release of its 7 series chips (Ivy Bridge).

The next-gen chips, named Haswell, will adopt a 22-nanometer (nm) process and improved architecture. The motherboard interface will also change from LGA1155 to LGA1150. With LGA1150 not being backward compatible, users will need to purchase 8 series motherboards.

According to Digitimes, "In April 2013, Intel will first launch performance- and mainstream-level Haswell processors, and will release Z87 and H87 to replace the existing Z77, Z75 and H77 chipsets. The entry-level H81 chipsets will be released in June 2013 to replace the existing H61 chipset. For enterprise chipsets, Intel will release Q87, Q85 and B85 with Q87 to also support Intel's vPro technology."
