June 15, 2015 6:56 AM EDT

Himax Technologies (Nasdaq: HIMX) is active early following reports that the company and Etron Technology may begin working to manufacture virtual reality chips.

Digitimes notes that demand for IC parts used in VR applications is expected to grow as names like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and others, all venture further into developing VR devices. It's expected that a number of new devices will hit shelves in the second half of 2015.

Himax will begin ramping LCoS (liquid crystal on silicon) module shipments in the latter part of this year. Specifics on which companies will be using Himax's chips weren't speculated.

Shares of Himax are flat early Monday.
