Word of a $99 tablet produced by Acer made the rounds this morning. The rumors we picked up by a number of major news outlets, helping to fuel selloffs in shares of Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS) and Amazon.com (Nadaq: AMZN), and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL). Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) investors were unfazed.
The effects of the report was tempered when it was revealed Acer planned to launch the $99 tablet in China, and while a U.S. launch is being considered, it is far from a done deal.
The device is said to have overall specs similar to Amazon's Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble's Nook.
If reports prove correct, Acer plans to undercut competitor pricing in an attempt to gain a foothold in the low end tablet market.
