Handset Makers Vie for Piece of Wearable Space with Android Wear Platform (GOOG)

August 28, 2014 3:11 PM EDT

Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) should be getting a wearable devices boost sometime soon.

According to Digitimes, names like Samsung, LG Electronics, ASUStek, HTC, Motorola Mobility, and Sony Mobile are developing new wearable devices running Google's Android Wear platform in the coming months.

It's also expected that sharp competition among the brands will lead to notable price drops in wearables.

News comes as Samsung debuted its Gear S smartwatch, which runs Tizen not Android and as speculation swirls around whether Apple will finally debut its first wearable device during its September 9th iPhone event.

Shares of Google are down 0.3 percent.
