Look out Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT), there might be a new sheriff-tablet in town soon.
According to a recent Chrome OS update from Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), an onscreen keyboard is finally being released in a stable version. Onscreen keyboard have been in developer domain for a while, ZDNet recently said.
Some speculated that it might be for a future touchscreen Chrombook, though Lenovo already has one out and why would you need an onscreen keyboard when you have a physical one right in front of you? There could be an argument for detaching the screen (ala - a convertible laptop), but then you have a tablet-like device.
Will a Chrome tablet be successful? Given how Microsoft has struggled to gain relevance for its surface tablet lineup, nothing is guaranteed. Google is already seeing gobs upon gobs of success with Android, so, if it can somehow integrate the two or incentivize users to compliment their Android experience with Chrome, then yes...Google could find some success with tablets.
Shares of Google are negative early Friday.
